Where the Wild Things Are ... Gay!
Brilliant children's book author and illustrator Maurice Sendak (80) came out in this week in the New York Times. "Was there anything he had never been asked? He paused for a few moments and answered, “Well, that I’m gay.” “I just didn’t think it was anybody’s business,” Mr. Sendak added. He lived with Eugene Glynn, a psychoanalyst, for 50 years before Dr. Glynn’s death in May 2007. He never told his parents: “All I wanted was to be straight so my parents could be happy. They never, never, never knew.” Children protect their parents, Mr. Sendak said."
Though Maurice Sendak is most well known for Where the Wild Things Are, my favorite book of his growing up was Little Bear's Friend. I read that story countless times and then read it to my children. The illustrations were so beautiful, you couldn't help fall in love with Little Bear. Happy Birthday, Mr. Sendak! Thank you for continuing to share beautiful stories with us -- like your 50 year relationship with your partner, Eugene Glynn.
